If you ask yourself where you want to be in 5 years times and are you on the right track to take you to where you set your goals to be? Taking the long view on careers requires us to be reflective, which can help determine whats really important in both our professional as well as in our personal life.
If you find the need to change course or make a career move forward it is currently a good idea to unbrand to then rebrand.
So, how do you answer, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
This can feel like a bit of a trick question, because sometimes the answer is, “not in this job,” or, “in your job,” or something like, “at a bigger better opportunity elsewhere.” But none of those are things you actually want to say to a hiring manager.
Applying this to the hotel and hospitality Industry for example, one way I like to think about it is: Think about where this position could realistically take you, and think about how that aligns with some of your broader professional goals. You also need to keep in mind that our industry is a very fast moving, high intensity and energy ladden field where people who bring the right amount of enthusiasm can go very far very fast.
If you are looking at the following steps you will see what I mean.
1. Work hard and be willing to move around to all the different departments in the hotel. It’s one of the best ways to learn every job and understand how a hotel operates. That knowledge makes you a great candidate for quickly building a management career.
2. Sign up for a hotel’s in-house management program, such as an internal trainee program. Hotels in the Alps offer this program as a fast track to top level positions in their international hotel business. It’s designed to give candidates the breadth of experience needed to take advantage of big career opportunities after less then 2 years.
3. Earn some industry-specific certificates. You can expand your horizon and knowledge as well as your network id you add important skills to your resume to help you stand out in the crowd. Along with a few years of experience, these certificates may open some doors to bigger opportunities.
One more improtant fact is that our business is and will always be a “peopel business”. This means that if you are good with people and know how to treat them, develope a feeling for communication and learn a few tricks in your way of interacting with others, you are on the best track to go far fast.
People like people who like people. Remeber that 🙂
